Boss Four ladled out a bowl of stew then leaned back against the kitchen counter as he took bite after bite. No one said a word until he’d finished and set the bowl in the sink.
“You want me to rinse this out or can it go right in the washer?” he asked.
“You can leave it there,” Crawford said.
“You sure? I don’t mind putting it in the washer myself,” Boss Four said.
“No, it’s cool, thanks,” Crawford said.
“Okey doke,” Boss Four said and rubbed his hands together. “Alright. Down to business. I am going to need all of you to put your little plans on hold and help me out.”
“Excuse me?” Midnight asked.
“Yes, I may have gotten the SMC in a bit of a pickle,” Boss Four said. “I sent Salvage Merc One to the Skrang home planet with a copy of the black data crystal. The idea was that it would give the Skrangs evidence that a faction of the Fleet wants war again. They can use it to clear their names if more Jirks are sent out to frame them.”
“That doesn’t sound very neutral,” I said.
“Oh, it’s totally neutral,” Boss Four replied. “We used to do this sort of thing during the War all the time to balance things out. Haven’t you guys figured out that the SMC is why the War ended? If we came across intel that would bring balance back to the conflict then we shared it. The Fleet and the Skrangs not so quickly realized that a prolonged War wasn’t going to be cost effective anymore because of what we were doing. Treaty, signed.”
“That’s why the Fleet wanted me dead, so the SMC would stop being neutral and go after the Skrangs,” I said.
“Oh, you already told him that part?” Boss Four asked Crawford and Midnight. They nodded. “Good. Less for me to explain. It’s also why the Skrangs staged the fake Edger attack on the station. They wanted the Fleet to attack the Edger separatists then swoop in and offer an alliance.”
“In case the SMC joined with the Fleet,” I said.
“What? Oh, no, they didn’t have a clue about that,” Boss Four said.
“You have this all figured out,” Crawford said. “So why do you need the separatists’ help?”
“No, no, you misunderstand,” Boss Four said. “I want nothing to do with the separatists. The Edger rights movement is your own deal. I’m looking for your specific help. You, Mr. Crawford. And your wife’s. I need you to assist One Eighty-Four here with the retrieval of Salvage Merc One. You see, we were late to the information about the Skrangs using fake Edgers. Didn’t find that out until One was taken hostage by the Skrangs. Oops.”
“Oh,” I said. “You want me to do what now? Go rescue Salvage Merc One?”
“Yep,” Boss Four said. “With some help from your old Marine friend and his highly skilled wife. And her people. But just her people. Not any of the other separatists, or it will look like we’ve joined forces and that would be bad.
